초 록 [국문]

본 연구는 민담, 종교, 연금술, 그리고 모래놀이치료에 나타난 항아리의 상징성을 탐색하 였다. ‘우렁각시’, ‘단지 할머니’, ‘식장산의 효자’와 같은 민담 속에서 항아리는 무의식의 통합, 모성, 인내, 심리적 변화를 상징하는 그릇으로 등장한다. 천주교, 도교, 불교와 같은 종교적 맥락에서는 항아리가 고난과 인내, 내면의 성찰과 수용을 통해 자기실현을 상징한 다. 연금술에서는 질그릇(aludel)이 내적 변화와 개성화의 그릇으로 기능하며, 흑화(nigredo), 백화(albedo), 적화(rubedo)의 과정을 통해 대극의 통합과 재탄생을 상징한다. 모래놀이치료 의 중년 여성 사례에서 항아리는 억압된 감정과 모성에 대한 양가감정을 품은 채, 알아차 림과 치유를 통해 성숙과 회복의 상징으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 다양한 부분에서 나타난 항아리의 상징성인 모성과 여성성, 인내, 성숙, 죽음과 재탄생, 궁극적으로는 치료적 변화 를 상징함을 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

초 록 [영문]

This study explores the symbolism of the jar as it appears in folktales, religion, alchemy, and Sandplay therapy. In Korean folktales such as “The Freshwater Snail Bride,” “The Old Lady in a Jar,” and “The Filial Son of Mt. Sikjang,” the jar appears as a symbolic vessel representing the integration of the unconscious, maternity, patience, and psychological transformation. In religious contexts such as Catholicism, Taoism, and Buddhism, the jar symbolizes self-realization through suffering, endurance, inner reflection, and acceptance. In alchemy, the earthenware vessel (aludel) serves as a container for inner transformation and individuation, symbolizing the integration of opposites and rebirth through the stages of nigredo, albedo, and rubedo. In a case study of a middle-aged woman in Sandplay therapy, the jar emerged as a symbol of maturity and healing, containing her repressed emotions and ambivalent feelings toward maternity, and reflecting a process of awareness and therapeutic change. This study is meaningful in that it identifies the symbolic significance of the jar across various domains-as a representation of the mother and the feminine, patience, maturity, death and rebirth, and ultimately, therapeutic transformation.
