As a basic work for exploring and discussion the clinical value of symbols in psychotherapy, the origins of symbol sand their meanings defined in various academic fields, the universal/personal sources of symbols, and the role sand developmental significance of symbols in the development of children’s play were examined. Firstly, to explore the psycho therapeutic factors of symbols, the therapeutic value of symbols expressed in children’s play was discussed from the psychoanalytic approaches of Freud and Melanie Klein. Next, the function sand therapeutic values of symbols in the psychotherapy process were discussed based on the theory of symbolism which is the representative theory of symbol research. In this discussion, the theoretic research of Verena Kast(1992) and the clinical research results of Dora Kalff(1966) were applied. Furthermore, the practice of various clinical studies to enrich the psychotherapeutic value of symbols was proposed.
