In this article, maternal symbolism of the mountain conceiving individuation was examined in the
context of analytical psychology. Three significant symbolic meanings were identified: the mountain
as maternity, the mountain as the one that brings about ego development, and which induces
individuation. The lexical definition and general characteristics of the mountain, the significance of
the mountain in various cultures and myths, including Korea, as well as the meanings that were
drawn from client's personal experience were analyzed. As a result of analysis, it was concluded that
the mountain was an important symbol that encouraged ego development and helped one discover
the mother complexes that were hidden in the deep abyss within the unconscious, so that it could
lead to individuation.
