초 록 [국문]

본 연구의 목적은 다리의 상징적 의미를 알아보는 것이었다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 건
축물로서 다리의 특성, 신화, 민담, 그리고 예술작품 중 영화를 중심으로 고찰한 다리의
상징성과 의미에 대해 살펴보았고, 모래놀이치료 세션에서 다리가 나타나는 방식과 그 의
미를 분석함으로써, 다리가 치료적 과정에서 어떤 역할을 하는지, 그리고 이를 통해 내담
자가 어떻게 자신의 내적 세계를 탐구하고 통합하는지를 해석하였다. 특히, 내담자가 선택
한 다리를 통해 자신의 삶의 시련과 대극 간의 갈등을 극복하기 위한 입문 의례로의 연결
을 어떻게 해나가는지에 중점을 두고 살펴보았다. 그 결과 다리의 보편적인 상징적 의미
들은 ‘저 너머 영역과의 연결’, ‘넘어서야 하는 문턱들’로 범주화할 수 있었으며, 이 두 개
의 범주를 관통하는 가장 큰 영향력을 가진 줄기로 ‘신성한 영역과의 연결과 전조(前兆)’
로 이해되었다. 한편, 다리의 개인적인 상징적 의미들을 관통하고 있는 것은 ‘입문 의례로
의 연결’이라는 상징성으로 이해되었다. 이를 통해 다리는 입문 의례로의 연결을 위한 제
3의 영역인 동시에 입문 의례로 연결되기 위해서 넘어서야 하는 문턱들이 존재하는 전조
영역이기도 하다는 것을 추론할 수 있었다. 이러한 맥락에서 입문 의례로의 연결은 반드
시 전조를 거쳐야 하며, 다리는 ‘입문 의례로의 연결’과 ‘입문 의례의 전조’가 함께 존재하는 것을 상징한다고 말할 수 있겠다.

초 록 [영문]

This study explores the symbolic meaning of bridges, examining their symbolism and
significance in architecture, mythology, folklore, and artistic works, with a particular focus on
film. Additionally, it analyzes the way that bridges appear in Sandplay therapy sessions and
related meanings to interpret their role in the therapeutic process, helping clients explore their
inner worlds and achieve integration. Specifically, the focus is on how client’s choice of
bridges connects them to an initiation for overcoming life’s trials and conflicts between the
opposites. The findings categorize the universal symbolic meanings of bridges into two main
themes: “connection to the realm beyond” and “thresholds to be crossed,” with the
predominant thread being the “connection to the sacred realm and a precursor.” On a
personal level, bridges symbolize a “connection to initiation,” suggesting that bridges represent
both a third realm for the connection to initiation and a precursor realm, where thresholds
must be crossed to achieve this connection. Therefore, the connection to initiation involves a
precursor, and bridges symbolize both the “connection to initiation” and the “precursor of
initiation.”
