초 록 [국문]

전 세계적으로 자살로 인해 많은 사람들이 자신의 생을 마감하고 있으며 선진국의 대열에 함께
서 있다고 자부하는 대한민국 사회에서도 심각한 사회문제로 나타나고 있다. 이 연구는 분석심
리학적 이해에 기반한 모래놀이 치료가 심각한 우울증과 자살사고를 겪는 내담자들에게 치료적
지원을 제공할 수 있는지를 탐구하고자 한다. 우울증은 히포크라테스 시대부터 광범위하게 연
구되어 온 주제로, 자살과 밀접하게 연관된 심리적 증상으로 남아 있다. 그러나 이 분야의 현재
연구와 임상적 접근은 외적 증상과 사회경제적 관점에 초점을 맞추는 데 그치는 경우가 많다.
이에 반해, 분석심리학자들은 내적 세계를 탐구하는 내면적 시선을 강조한다. 이러한 관점에서
James Hillman과 David Rosen과 같은 학자들은 자살과 우울증에 대해 심오한 심리학적 통찰을 제
공한다. 이들은 인간 심층 심리의 깊은 층을 다루어 기존의 자살 연구에서 종종 간과되는 측면
을 확장하며, 이를 자아의 재탄생을 위한 기회로 이해하도록 제시한다. 본 연구는 풍부한 상징
들과 원형들이 나타나는 모래놀이치료 사례분석을 통해 우울과 자살사고가 있는 내담자에게 어
떤 치료적 도움을 주는지 고찰하였다. 안전하게 보호된 모래상자 안에서 내담자는 새로운 변화
를 갈망하는 자아가 자살이라는 극단적 방법이 아닌 자아의 상징적 죽음을 통해 변화되어 갈
수 있는 가능성을 모래놀이치료는 제공한다. 현실에서 내담자가 자아의 전능감이 멈춰지며 겪
게 되는 절망과 우울의 상태에서 헤어 나오지 못할 때 모래상자는 원형들과 만날 수 있는 무한
히 열려있는 신성한 공간을 제공하며 변화와 회복으로 인도한다.

초 록 [영문]

Globally, countless individuals end their lives through suicide, and South Korea,
which prides itself on being among the ranks of advanced nations, is not exempt
from this pressing social issue. This study seeks to explore whether sandplay
therapy, grounded in an analytical psychological understanding, can offer therapeutic
support to clients experiencing severe depression and suicidal ideation. Depression,
studied extensively since the time of Hippocrates, remains a profound psychological
symptom closely linked to suicide. However, current research and clinical
approaches in this field are largely limited by their focus on external symptoms and
socio-economic perspectives. In contrast, analytical psychologists advocate for an
inward gaze, emphasizing the exploration of the inner world. Scholars like James
Hillman and David Rosen, from this tradition, provide profound psychological
insights into suicide and depression. They expand our understanding of these
phenomena by addressing the deep layers of the human psyche that conventional
suicide research often neglects, framing them as opportunities for the rebirth of the ego. This study examines case analyses of sandplay therapy, a modality rich in
symbols and archetypes, to investigate its therapeutic potential for clients grappling
with depression and suicidal ideation. Within the safety of the sandbox, clients can
explore transformative possibilities, moving away from the extreme path of literal
suicide toward a symbolic death and rebirth of the ego. For clients who feel
trapped in depression and suicidal ideation, unable to transcend the collapse of their
sense of omnipotence, the sandbox offers a sacred, boundless space where they can
encounter archetypes and be guided toward transformation and healing.
